Indications for use of Prednisolone

Indications for the prescription of Prednisolone are the following diseases of the spine:

Injury to the nerves and joints on the spine


Inflammation on the spinal cord or its membranes


Arthritis of non-infectious origin

Ankylosing Spondylitis

Swelling of the muscles, nerves and other structures in the spine

The absence of effect of drug therapy of the spine

Injuries of the spine, joints, blood vessels and nerves, and the spinal cord

Severe pain in the spine

Contraindications of Prednisolone

Contraindications to the appointment of Prednisolone are the following states of the patient.

Lactation period

Pregnancy (especially before 12 weeks of gestation)


Disease or syndrome of Itsenko-Kushing



Allergy to the drug and its components

Endocarditis of acute form


Heart failure of the 3rd stage

The principle of action of Prednisolone

Prednisone is one of the most active drugs of this group. The main effects of the drug on the human body include anti-inflammatory, analgesic, decongestant and anti-toxic ones. Also, the drug potentiates the action of other medicines prescribed for the treatment of diseases of the spine.

Such properties of the drug are related to the fact that it affects the hormone-receptor compounds, enters the nucleus of cells, reduces the production of certain enzymes and other chemical compounds.

Instructions for use of Prednisolone

Prednisolone in pill form

The drug is used inside, and washed out with liquid. The first dose is usually 20-30 mg per reception 1 times a day. A maintaining dose is usually 5-10 mg per day. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg. The duration of treatment depends on the patient’s condition and is selected strictly individually. You may reduce the dose of the drug only gradually, over several days or weeks.

Children are prescribed 1 mg of the drug per each kg of weight per day, divided into 4-6 receptions.  A maintaining dose is usually 300-600 mg per kg of weight of the baby per day.

Side effects of Prednisolone

Adverse effects of Prednisolone may include the following symptoms in a patient:

Increased pilosis (hirsutism) of female body


Menstrual disorders

Pathological fractures due to increased bone fragility (with frequent and long receptions)

Adrenal insufficiency

The increase in blood glucose

Ulceration in the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, especially in stomach

Sexual dysfunction

If you experience such symptoms, you need symptomatic treatment. If the patient’s condition allows, the appointment of Prednisolone is canceled.

There were data on the cases of drug overdose. If you exceed the dosage and notice the appearance of any signs of intoxication, it is recommended to consult a doctor and take symptomatic treatment.

Special instructions

You should abandon breastfeeding during lactation for the whole period of treatment with Prednisone. Prednisolone is contraindicated up to the 12th week of pregnancy. Later it is possible in case of emergency.

Children are allowed taking Prednisone, but they must adhere to the most accurate dosages and take the medication only when it is absolutely necessary.

Alcoholic beverages do not affect Prednisone in the body.
