Drug Description
Emsam is a brand name of selegiline. This drug is used for the treatment for Parkinson’s disease and depression. Emsam comes in the form of patch that should be applied on the skin.
Important information
Emsam’s active component is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) called selegiline. MAOIs prevent the activity of enzymes in the monoamine oxidase family, and are regarded as the best treatment in cases when tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs proved to be ineffective. The latest MAOIs such as selegiline are regarded as safe for initial stage of treatment.
This drug is mostly used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, as it increases the effect of L-DOPA chemicals that fight the illness. Emsam is the first transdermal patch with selegiline as a main active component. It consists of 3 layers: an outer layer, an adhesive layer and a release liner. The adhesive patch delivers the medicine through the skin to the blood.
Emsam transdermal patches come in 6, 9 or 12 mg dosage.
As Selegiline contains the same elements as some illicit drugs, it is a controlled substance in Japan which can be bought only on prescription.
Selegiline is not a controlled substance in the US, but needs a doctor’s prescription to get from a drug store.
Dosage
Emsam dosage depends on the patient’s health condition. Usually, one patch must be used a day.
