Avalide is a drug that consist of angiotensin II receptor antagonist (irbesartan) and a low dose thiazide diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide).
Avalide is intended for the treatment of hypertension.
Each Avalide pill consists of 150 mg irbesartan and 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide.
Always follow your doctor’s prescriptions. Avalide can be taken irrespective of the mealtime.
The medicine may be combined with other drugs for the treatment of hypertension.
Initial dosage of Avalide is 150/12.5 mg once a day. It may be increased twice after a week of treatment. The maximum dosage is 300/25 mg once a day.
Possible adverse effects
Sickness, vomiting, dryness in the mouth, head pain, weakness or diarrhea may be caused by the use of this drug. If these symptoms last or get worse, inform your doctor as soon as possible.
Tell your doctor if you suffer from vertigo, muscle fatigue or seizures, stomachache, change in amount of urine (at the initial stage of treatment), excessive thirst, blackouts or mood swings, persistent pain in the throat, fever, hemorrhage or bruises, jaundice, breast pain, increased heartbeat or pain in the joints.
In case of allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical assistance.
The most common symptoms of an allergy are: hives, itching, swelling, vertigo or breathing difficulty.
If you note any other adverse effects, consult your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you suffered from kidney/liver dysfunction or cardiovascular disease; diabetes, gout, increased level of cholesterol, impaired metabolism of potassium or sodium and allergy to the sulfa drugs.
Avoid engaging in any tasks that require high concentration, as this drug can cause dizziness.
To prevent dizziness and vertigo, don’t get up or sit down abruptly.
Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can increase the side effects.
Perspiration or diarrhea can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and cause vertigo.
Don’t exercise too much.
Hydrochlorothiazide can increase your photosensitivity.
Avoid being exposed to the sun too long.
Always apply a sunscreen before going out.
Take the drug with special caution if you’re an older patient, as this group is especially sensitive to the drug adverse effects.
This drug must be used only in case of emergency during the pregnancy.
Hydrochlorothiazide can get into the breast milk.
Even though there are no reports of harm to the newborns, consult your physician before breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter drugs you’re taking, particularly potassium supplements, other hypertension drugs, lithium, barbiturates, drugs for the treatment of diabetes, colestipol, cholestyramine, NSAIDs (for example, ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin), corticosteroids (such as prednisone), medicines that cause kidney dysfunction and any drugs for allergy and cold.
