Showcasing School Health Service Data
| 10 August 2009
North Carolina's partnership with many agencies in the use of school health service data was showcased in a poster presentation at American Public Health Association annual conference in San Diego November 2008. Author Jessica Gerdes, State School Nurse Consultant, and co-authors Winston Liao and Elizabeth Mizelle, described the process of school health services data collection, dissemination and utilization.
The concept for the presentation originated from Mr. Liao, who is a fellow with the CDC, assigned to the North Carolina asthma program. Mr. Liao was impressed with the data and was able to utilize the data to advance improvements in statewide care for children with asthma. Ms. Mizelle is the data manager for the Children & Youth Branch of the Division of Public Health, and manages all "behind the scenes" aspects of the data collection and utilization process. Viewers of the poster commented on the high (100%) compliance with the request for data from the schools, and the ability of the Division of Public Health to share aggregate data with a wide variety of public health and school health professionals.
