Gayle Starkey (right) at the NASN Annual Conference2008 NASN Poster Presentation Award Winner
Gayle Starkey, SNANC Central Region
Catherine “Gayle” Starkey RN of Wake County was awarded the top prize in the Poster Section/Practice Division at the NASN conference in Albuquerque, NM. Her poster outlined a dog bite prevention program entitled A "Tail" of Prevention: Partners Tackle a Biting Problem. The poster demonstrated a simple, engaging and effective method for school nurses to address a clearly identified safety issue with young students.
According to national data, children under the age of 10 suffer the highest number of dog bites. A group in Wake County adapted a successful dog-bite prevention program from Nevada called Bow Wow Ow to address this issue. The curriculum is targeted for kindergarten through 2nd graders. A volunteer artist developed a coloring book and certificate of completion in both English & Spanish. Pre and post tests showed a great increase in awareness of bite prevention by the students.  We are very proud of Gayle and this program. Congratulations!

We Have "Great Nurses"
The Raleigh Region of SNANC is proud to honor current and past winners of the "Great 100 Nurses" of North Carolina.  The "Great 100" is a grassroots organization that recognizes 100 North Carolina nurses each year who demonstrate excellence in nursing and a commitment to the profession.  Read more . .
