Third Annual Scholarship Award Winners

The Marilyn Asay Fund is a major project for the School Nurse Association of NC. The Fund was established by SNANC in honor of Marilyn Asay, who was the NC State School Nurse Consultant from 1987 until May, 2005.

This summer the Scholarship Committee selected two scholarship recipients, Shannon Pointer and June Hensley. They received $500 in August to use towards their educational expenses and received official recognition at the SNANC Annual Meeting on October 27th in Chapel Hill at the Friday Center.

June-HensleyJune is "re-entering" the academic arena after eleven years to pursue a BSN. She is currently enrolled in the School of Nursing at Western Carolina University.  She already has a BS in Allied Health but wants to pursue a BSN degree to expand her management skills in nursing and enhance the school health program in Cherokee County Schools. Her long range goal is to obtain a master's degree in nursing education.  June serves Ranger Elementary/Middle School as well as Hiwassee Elementary School. June lives in Murphy, NC with her husband, Dan, and their three children, Colby, Dawson and Emma.

Shannon-PointeShannon feels that school nursing is a dynamic specialty that focuses on strengthening health and improving the learning of school age children. After working in Person County Schools for five years and she is currently enrolled in the Master's Program at UNC Charlotte School of Nursing. Upon graduation Shannon plans to sit for certification for Advanced Practice Clinical Specialist in Community Health Nursing.  In the future she would like to be a State School Nurse Consultant. She is the Lead Nurse and serves four elementary schools. Shannon lives in Semora, NC with her husband, John, and their five year old daughter, Bliss.
